  1. Maps: Always carry a map detailing the area you will be visiting. The map should be appropriate for the area and activity you will be undertaking.

  2. Compass or Global Positioning System (G.P.S.): It is imperative you always carry a compass or G.P.S. It is recommended you carry both. A compass is ideal for your trek being in a general direction. A G.P.S. Allows you to find your way to safety if you lose your way.

  3. Flashlight: It is imperative you carry a flashlight or headlight, if not both. This is one of the necessary items that will guide you at night.

  4. Extra Food: You never know if you decide to extend your backpacking trek. If so, you must take extra food. Very few people exist that can actually live off the land and you should not even consider that possibility.

  5. Extra Clothing: Regardless if your trek occurs in warm weather or cold weather, always take extra clothes to prepare for the unexpected.

  6. Sunglasses: Summertime or cold weather backpacking always requires you carry sunglasses to avoid against glare.

  7. First Aid Kit: This is one of the most essential items you should always carry. You can either purchase or make your own. Be sure either has the essentials needed for any medical emergency.

  8. Tools and Pocket Knife: Knives and tools are used for first aid, food preparation, cutters,cap lifters, tweezers pliers, etc.

  9. Waterproof Matches: Always carry waterproof matches you can strike anywhere. How else can you light a fire at night or your cook stove. You may even carry a cigarette lighter as a bonus.

  10. Water Filtration System: Carrying water alone is heavy and may not last as long as needed. Always select an ideal water filtration system providing for unlimited water. However if your planned trek will only be for a day or two, perhaps carrying water will suffice. However always plan for the unexpected.

  11. Whistle: Remember for emergencies when you are lost or someone else is lost, a whistle can be heard a long way and is ideal for this type of emergency.

  12. Insect Repellent: If you trek occurs during the summertime or warm weather months, always carry insect repellent to ward off insect bites and stings.

  13. Sunburn Repellent: Prepare to avoid sunburn that could lead to a first aid situation. Keep in mind the higher the elevation, the greater the intensity of the sun.
